Advice For Dealing with Wet Weather on the Road
It’s official. Storm season is here.
The summer months in Australia can bring about massive storms, heavy rain and chaotic winds which can make driving dangerous. Drivers need to be cautious and aware of water on roads, lowered visibility and debris.
While the overall road toll on Australian roads has been on the decline over the years, there are still some simple steps we can all take to ensure we get home safely over this storm season and beyond.
Slow Down
While this seems obvious, many people seem to forget that speeding isn’t just going over the signed speed limit. Speeding also occurs when you fail to drive to the conditions. This could include fog, roadworks or wet weather.
Of course, you should always stay at or below the signed speed limit but consider going a bit slower once conditions on the road change.
Stay Focused
Over the last few years, we have seen more and more disciplinary measures being implemented to try and deter drivers from getting distracted while behind the wheel.
Whether it’s checking your mobile phone, eating or drinking, taking your eyes off the road even for a second can lead to disastrous consequences.
Did you know that if you look at your phone for 3 seconds while travelling at 60%, you have travelled 50 meters without looking at the roads?
Avoid Flooded Roads
For years and years, state government messaging has reminded us that flooded roads are dangerous and best to be avoided. As the saying goes ‘If it’s flooded, forget it.’
Water is often deeper than it appears to be and your vehicle can easily be swept away, putting your life in severe danger.
If the worst situation does present itself and fast moving water begins to sweep your car away while you’re still in it, roll down the window and get out as soon as you can. Staying inside your vehicle is incredibly dangerous.
While these are simple steps, it never hurts to be reminded. No one wants Christmas to become a time of tragedy for your family and loved ones.
