Chinchilla Melon Festival
Looking for something fun to do next weekend? As a logistics and road freight company operating throughout Queensland and Northern New South Wales we’ve got fingers on the pulse for all things food, and you know what the means right? We love food festivals! The perfect opportunity to try local produce at its freshest. Next weekend, Chinchilla will be celebrating Melon Festival! In this post, we give you a quick guide to enjoying Chinchilla Melon Festival.
What is it? As the name depicts celebrate Melons with the home of melon growers. Known as the ‘Melon Capital’ of Australia, the area produces a quarter of Australia’s melones and celebrates the fact biennially in February.
Why go? There’s back-to-back entertainment for the whole family with markets, a street parade, arts and crafts, a poets’ breakfast, luncheons, free concerts, and loads more over the week. So pull on some old clothes and take to the streets of Chinchilla, that are awash with melon mayhem. But be warned: you might end up in a very sticky situation!
Some of the free entertainment to look forward to includes:
- The ever-popular Melon Skiing (there’s definitely an art to it);
- Melon Dash for Cash;
- Melon Bungee;
- Melon Bullseye;
- Melon Ball Games;
- Chariot Race;
- Melon Ironman;
- Pip Spitting Competition;
- Street stalls and a Parade
- Art & Craft Competition;
- The Family Concert
When is it? Held next weekend, February 16-19
Where can I stay? You could opt for camping or book the weekend at one of two lodgings in town (the Commercial Hotel Motel or Club Hotel & Central Motor Inn).
How to get there? It’s definitely a weekend trip. About 3 ½ hours north-west from Brisbane, it’s a beautiful drive up through the Aussie outback. Chinchilla is situated on the crossroad of the Warrego Highway. You can drive there or why not opt for a fun bus trip! Travel in air-con coaches with on-board movies and meal breaks along the way with Greyhouse Australia or Murrays, for a real holiday experience.
