Spring produce guide: October
We’re already into the second month of Spring, and October offers a whole host of fresh and delicious produce for all to enjoy.
As the weather heats up, here are some of the fantastic fruits and vegetables you should check out in October.
Fruits
If you’re a lover of avocado, then October is a month you’re going to love. The delicious, healthy fruit is in season during October, so it may be time to whip up your own special version of guacamole. But even if avocado isn’t your thing, there are still plenty of other fruits that thrive during the second month of Spring. They are:
- Avocado
- Bananas
- Berries; particularly blueberries, strawberries, and young berries
- Carambola (starfruit)
- Grapefruit
- Loquats
- Mangoes
- Melons
- Oranges; particularly Valencia oranges
- Papaya
- Passionfruit
- Pawpaw
- Pineapple
- Pomelo
Vegetables
Want to add a little kick to your next meal? Well, you’re in luck, because October is a great time to buy chillies. It doesn’t matter whether you want a mild kick or a full-on spicy meal, chillies are incredibly versatile and can be used in a range of different ways to bring flavour and/or heat to a meal. By removing the seeds, you’ll reduce the intensity of the heat they create. Naturally the less chilli you use, the milder the spiciness will be.
Not too big on spicy meals? No worries, because there are plenty of other vegetables to choose from in October. They are:
- Artichokes
- Asian greens
- Asparagus
- Beans, Broad, Green
- Beetroot
- Cucumber
- Chillies
- Fresh garlic
- Lettuce
- Mushrooms
- Onions; particularly Spring and Green onions – naturally ‘Spring onions’ earn that name because they grow best in the Spring
- Peas
- Potatoes
- Silverbeet
- Spinach
- Watercress
- Zucchini
